BRUSSELS, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union has strongly condemned the execution of American journalist James Foley by the Islamic State (IS) insurgents, Sebastien Brabant, spokesperson for the EU Foreign Policy chief told the press Thursday.

“This brutal act, like the many other human rights violations which are perpetrated by the Islamic State, denies universally recognized values and rights including freedom of press for which Foley risked his life several times,” the official said.

“Such forms of terrorism constitute one of the most serious threats to international peace and security and the EU is more committed than ever to support international efforts to fight terrorism,” he added.

The IS members have released a video showing the beheading of James Foley, US journalist, captured by jihadists in Syria in 2012. A masked man on the footage, who performed the execution of Foley, was speaking English with southern British accent, and apparently was a UK national, as The Guardian reported Wednesday. The militants claim the execution was carried out in response to US drone and air attacks against the IS forces in Northern Iraq.
