KIEV, August 11 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union is ready to allocate 2.5 million euros (about $3.4 million) to arrange humanitarian assistance for citizens of the Ukrainian eastern regions targeted by the Kiev-initiated military operation, the European Commission president said in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko Monday.

“José Manuel Barroso … said that the European Union was ready to allocate 2.5 million euros (about $3.4 million) for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine,” the press service of the Ukrainian president reported.

According to the statement, Barroso also called for the establishment of a special coordination mechanism to control the deliveries and the movement of displaced people in the Ukrainian east.

Earlier in the day, the Kremlin press service announced that Russia and the International Committee of the Red Cross were sending a convoy with humanitarian cargo to troubled Ukrainian regions. Russia initially came up with a proposal on the humanitarian mission last Tuesday at the UN Security Council.

The Ukrainian conflict which initially erupted as a series of anti-government protests has by now turned into a full-scale crisis teetering on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. Thousands of people have already fled the country seeking shelters in neighboring Russia and those who stayed are now trapped in combat zones.

According to the latest UN report, the conflict has claimed the lives of more than 1,100 civilians since then, with nearly 3,500 injured.
