Addressing the Malaysia Airlines disaster of July 17, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Yuriy Sergeyev Wednesday said “on July 21 the president of Ukraine ordered its military to establish a 40-kilometer safety zone around the crash site and to stop all military activities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

UNITED NATIONS, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - Addressing the Malaysia Airlines disaster of July 17, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Yuriy Sergeyev Wednesday said “on July 21 the president of Ukraine ordered its military to establish a 40-kilometer safety zone around the crash site and to stop all military activities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

On July 28, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the Ukrainian military is still active inside the 40-kilometer radius, in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2166.

Churkin cited an agreement he said was just reached by the foreign ministers of the Netherlands and Australia, and Ukraine to bring their investigators to the crash site, saying that Poroshenko again “promised to put an end to fighting in the area.”

Sergeyev on Wednesday said the “ministers for foreign affairs of Ukraine and Australia signed an agreement on sending of Australian personnel to Ukraine in connection to the MH17 crash. Australian personnel that will be sent to Ukraine under the agreement will be providing security for the crash site.”

However, Sergeyev said, this will require the ratification of the parliament, which will convene for that purpose on July 31. Sergeyev did not say if the Australian personnel would be armed, nor if that would require approval of the UN Security Council.
