BERLIN, July 28 (RIA Novosti) – The German government is in favor of sectoral sanctions against Russia, government spokeswoman Christiane Wirtz said Monday.

"The government is in favor for a concrete sectoral package of measures," Wirtz told journalists.

According to her, the German government believes that only this type of package of measurements could become “a clear signal for Russia” coming from Germany and the European Union.

Germany is planning to conclude discussions in Brussels by Tuesday. German Chancellor Angela Merkel could suspend her vacation and attend the session of the European Council, Wirtz said.

The European Commission adopted legislative proposals on sectoral sanctions against Russia on Saturday. These sanctions are to affect the capital market, the defense industry, dual-use goods and the export of sensitive technologies in the energy sector. On Tuesday, EU ambassadors will discuss the legislative.

An opinion poll published by German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel Monday has revealed that more than 50 percent of Germans would back tougher sanctions against Russia even if they meant a loss of “many jobs” and a slowdown in the nation’s economic growth.

The Russian Foreign Ministry previously called the “language of sanctions” counterproductive and said these measures would have a boomerang effect on European economies.
