European Commission submitted proposal on new sanctions against Russia in connection with Ukrainian crisis, as it was earlier demanded by the foreign ministers of EU countries, according to the press release issued by Commission Thursday.

BRUSSELS, July 24 (RIA Novosti) – European Commission submitted proposal on new sanctions against Russia in connection with Ukrainian crisis, as it was earlier demanded by the foreign ministers of EU countries, according to the press release issued by Commission Thursday.

The Commission will be tabling tomorrow a paper with actions on each of the areas which were identified by the Foreign Affairs Council [ministers], European Commission’s statement said.

The EU Ambassadors are expected to discuss additional sanctions against Russia based on the proposal prepared by European Commission. The measures in question will target Russia’s financial and defense sectors, as well as expand the list of both individuals and companies, whose assets will be frozen.

Earlier Tuesday, the foreign ministers of EU member states ordered European Commission to develop a proposal on additional sanctions against Moscow. The document should contain actions in such fields as capital market, defense, dual-use goods and export of high-sensing equipment for the energy sector.

Earlier this day, European Commission confirmed that discussion on the possible new sanctions against Russia will continue next week.

The United States and the European Union imposed targeted sanctions against a number of Russian officials and companies as a response to Crimea’s reunification with Russia in March.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has repeatedly called the language of sanctions counterproductive and said these measures would have a boomerang effect on European economies.
