Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev believes it is necessary to work more effectively under political factors and intensifying trend for protectionism from foreign partners.

MOSCOW, July 23 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev believes it is necessary to work more effectively under political factors and intensifying trend for protectionism from foreign partners.

“We see a strengthening in protectionism that is affecting our producers, on our goods and on our companies, and this trend most likely won’t weaken,” Medvedev said Wednesday during a meeting with the heads of trade missions.

“It is necessary to adapt to the new environment,” noted Medvedev.

The Prime Minister added that the Russian government needs to follow cases of discrimination of Russian companies and protect their interests.

“Any case of discrimination needs to be followed closely and, if possible, predict various actions and staunchly protect our legal interests, explain the reason for our reciprocal measures and the reason they were imposed. We cannot allow others to support their economy on our account or at our loss,” Medvedev said.

Earlier this year, the United Stated and the European Union imposed targeted sanctions against a number of Russian officials and companies as a response to Crimea’s reunification with Russia.

After the Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine, Washington has been pushing the EU to implement further sanctions against Moscow.

The European Commission is expected to introduce a new package of sanctions targeting Russia’s financial and defense sectors on July 24.

Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly called the language of sanctions counterproductive and said these measures would have a boomerang effect on European economies.
