Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to attend international talks in Geneva about Iran’s controversial nuclear program amid hopes for a breakthrough deal, Russian diplomats said Friday.

GENEVA, November 8 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to attend international talks in Geneva about Iran’s controversial nuclear program amid hopes for a breakthrough deal, Russian diplomats said Friday.

“Many problems are emerging, and the innermost interests of a number of states are becoming affected. This is the reason why this meeting is being upgraded to a ministerial level,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told RIA Novosti.

“Tomorrow we expect to attain a longstanding result that the whole world hopes for,” he continued.

A source in the Russian delegation said the foreign minister would likely arrive in Geneva on Saturday.

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Geneva on Friday after interrupting his tour of the Middle East. The foreign ministers of France, Britain and Germany also arrived the same day.

Several global powers and Iran are negotiating a tentative deal that would freeze some of Iran’s suspected nuclear activities in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions.
