HAVANA, February 25 (RIA Novosti) - Cuban leader Raul Castro, re-elected for another five-year term earlier on Monday (Moscow time), said it would be his last term as the Cuban head of state.

“I’d like to make it clear - this will be my last mandate,” he said, urging to “pass the baton” to the country's young generation.

He also suggested to limit a leader’s tenure by two terms and to introduce age limit for heads of state.

Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, 52, who was chosen as first vice-president, will assume the Cuban leadership in case of Castro’s early resignation.

The National Assembly of the People's Power, which convenes twice a year, elected the country’s leadership for a new five-year term until 2018 by announcing the make-up of the 31-member Council of State, which represents the parliament between its sessions.

The Council of State chairman is the head of the state and the council of ministers. The post was held by Fidel Castro in 1976-2006, who then delegated his powers to his younger brother. Raul Castro was officially elected to head the Council of State on February 24, 2008.
