KIEV, November 6 (RIA Novosti) – Hundreds of Ukrainian opposition activists continue to rally outside the Central Election Commission’s building early on Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s ruling Party of Regions won about 30 percent of the vote during the October 28 elections, appearing to secure the parliamentary majority it sought to keep in an informal alliance with the Communist Party of Ukraine.
Protesters gathered outside the election authority’s building in Kiev on Monday to protest against alleged election fraud. Late in the evening opposition leaders decided to continue the protest until the commission resumes its work at 11:00 local time [9:00 GMT].
“So far, we are unable to predict how the events would unfold. But we will ask people to stay here until morning at least,” said Oleh Tyahnybok, the leader of the nationalist Freedom party.
Opposition leaders met with CEC head Volodymyr Shapoval twice on Monday. They said after the meeting opposition parties were prepared for any scenario, including a revote in constituencies under question.
Earlier in the day, the CEC said its probe revealed that “it was unable to conclusively establish the results of the vote in five single-seat constituencies” out of 225 in total. The commission will request the parliament to order a revote there.
Opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk said the opposition would also demand that CEC either ordered a revote or declared opposition candidates winners in two other single-seat electoral districts.
