Ukrainian Prosecutors Downplay Vote Fraud Reports

Citizen reports about violations during the election campaign and last Sunday’s parliamentary vote in Ukraine have largely proven to be false, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said on Wednesday.

Citizen reports about violations during the election campaign and last Sunday’s parliamentary vote in Ukraine have largely proven to be false, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said in a statement they had received 94 complaints about electoral violations, including bribing voters.

“Five of those 94 requests proved to be true. Five criminal cases were launched (one in Crimea, one in the Chernovtsy Region and three in the Lugansk Region),” the statement says.

On October 28, Ukrainians voted in parliamentary polls. Over 5,000 candidates vied for 450 seats in parliament, with half of the deputies to be elected on party tickets and the other half in single-mandate constituencies in a first-past-the-post vote.

International observers on Monday slammed the elections as “a step backward” for democracy and said the vote was marred by fraud, intimidation and other abuses.
