A Loius Vuitton trunk-shaped pavilion has appeared on the Red Square, much to the indignation of officials and Moscow residents. The trunk was supposed to host the Spirit of Adventure exhibition of designer suitcases on December 2, but its fate already looks in doubt. This RIA Novosti photo chronicle shows the other unorthodox uses to which the Red Square has been put.
In July 2013, the Red Square hosted a grand flower festival devoted to the venerable GUM store’s 120th anniversary. A vivid, living quilt of 650,000 plants carpeted the cobblestoned expanse.
In July 2011, the Silk Way cross country rally started from the Red Square. About 100 teams from 27 countries took part. The audience enjoyed a freestyle motocross show held in the space.
In August 2013, the Red Square hosted the annual Spasskaya Tower International Military Music festival. The Kremlin Equestrian Riding School is a regular participant in the event. The square was sprinkled with plant cuttings to make the surface comfortable for horses in the trick riding show.
In January 2009, an ice rink on Red Square hosted a historical hockey match between veteran Soviet Union-era stars and a Rest-of-the-World team.
