Traditionally, in Russia the tragedy is commemorated on the anniversary of the event.
A requiem was held on Monday in the school’s courtyard followed by a minute of silence at 1:05 p.m., the time the first blast hit the gym. Traditionally, after the second bell, students released 334 white balloons into the air.
After that, the commemoration ceremony continued at the cemetery The City of Angels where the victims are buried.
At the cemetery the names of the deceased were called and balloons were released into the air. Then flowers were laid at The Tree of Mourning and the monument to commanders killed during the hostage crisis.
Over 30 terrorists took control of school No. 1 in Beslan on the morning of September 1, 2004, during the opening day assembly. There were 334 victims, including 318 hostages, 186 of whom were children.
