The first mention of Lord Novgorod the Great, near the source of the Volkhov River that flows from Lake Ilmen, dates back to 859 A.D. In 1044 Prince Yaroslav laid the wooden defensive walls, which were replaced by brickwork in the XIII century.

Built in 1439, the Belfry is architecturally unique, as nothing like it had been built in Russia before. The largest bell (the festive bell) weighs 26 tons. In front of the Belfry and in a room on the second floor there is an exhibition of the bells of the Novgorod Kremlin.
