On this day they eat special cakes called yuansyao (or tanyuan) made from rice flour with a sweet filling. The filling may be made from hawthorn berries, figs, beans, sesame seeds or chocolate. The cakes are usually round in shape or like normal cookies. There are also various folk performances: dances of dragons and lion dances are performed both on New Year's Eve and on other holidays.
