St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko said she liked the name Yo-Mobile. The car’s name comes from ‘ё’, the seventh letter of the Russian alphabet, pronounced ‘yo’.
“The letter ‘yo’ was one of the last additions to the Russian alphabet. It was coined by the academy of sciences in St. Petersburg and helped simplify spelling,” Valentina Matviyenko said at the ceremony marking the start of construction. The governor expressed hope that Yo-Mobiles would have the same success as their namesake letter.
The companies Yarovit and Onexim agreed to jointly develop the hybrid Yo-Mobile last year. The car will be powered by an internal combustion engine that runs on petrol or natural gas as well on electric motors.
Production at the plant is expected to begin in the second half of 2012. According to Mikhail Prokhorov, investment in the first stage of production will reach 150 million euro.
The plant will first start making cars with conventional engines, while the first hybrid Yo-Mobiles are expected to roll out a year later. The first model manufactured at the plant will be a five-door cross coupe.
According to the Yo-Avto company, more than 100,000 Yo-Mobiles had been pre-ordered as of late May. The car will cost between 350,000 and 450,000 rubles.
