The biggest blot on the world’s environmental copybook for 2010 was the oil rig accident in the Gulf of Mexico, the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history. In April, an explosion rocked the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which BP was leasing from the Swiss company Transocean until 2013. As a result, 11 people were killed and about 5 million barrels of crude oil leaked into the Gulf of Mexico.
