The truly unearthly landscapes of northern Norway are reminiscent of a journey to another planet. Photographs from a participant in RIA Novosti’s You Are the Reporter project.
This feeling is compounded by region’s lack of inhabitants. It is common to drive for hours and not see a settlement. Only the reindeer, walking near the road with no fear, show that there is life here. This atmosphere helps a person think about life.
During the summer season in transpolar Norway the sun shines so brightly that one gets the same tan as in the Mediterranean region. The scenes in the northern town of Alta could be mistaken taken for views of a beach by some southern sea.
Norwegian writers of past centuries often described the rough life of local fishermen. But today’s fishermen are rather better-off and the increasing tourist flow of recent years has helped to develop the islands and their infrastructure. New hotels are being built in a typical Scandinavian style, adding to the national feeling of the trip.
The hotels in northern Norway deserve to be mentioned in a separate story. For example, this building – more akin to a tavern where gold diggers enjoyed spending evenings in the time of a gold rush - is an administrative part of a hotel.
And former houses of fishermen have been reconstructed into hotel rooms. Despite their ascetic appearance, inside there is everything a visitor needs: heat, a shower and modern conveniences.
The city of Tromso has the northernmost cathedral and the northernmost botanic garden. Although the plants are not as colorful as in southern gardens, visitors admire their simplicity and love for life. No other place in the world has this kind of beauty carved out of stone.
