The Kyrgyz police have sided with the provisional opposition government set up on Wednesday after riots broke out in several regions of the country, Bolotbek Sherniyazov, the Interior Minister of the provisional opposition government, told journalists.

They were provoked by the authorities’ ban on a nationwide congress (kurultai) and arrest of opposition leaders on Tuesday evening. On April 6, unrest began in Talas, a major city in northern Kyrgyzstan, where protesters seized the local administration building. In the morning of April 7, protest rallies in all regions of the country demanded release of the opposition leaders. In Bishkek, protesters seized the TV station and the parliament, and then broke into the Government House. The opposition leaders were released in the afternoon.
