Alexei Lyakhov, director general of the Weather Forecast Service, said that the service’s computers showed no sign of heavy snow in the hours leading up to the downfall.
The long-awaited snow that started in Moscow on Monday afternoon after an unexpected warm spell will create a beautiful winter cityscape, Alexei Lyakhov told RIA Novosti.
By 6 p.m. Moscow’s Vorobyovy Gory [Sparrow Hills] received five centimeters of snow, and the weather forecast predicted about 7-8 centimeters of snow by the end of the day.
“Almost all central roads and ring-ways are blocked. Traffic is moving at a crawl,” according to reporters. The snowfall that hit Moscow on Monday was heavier in the city’s northwestern parts, but the most troublesome districts are under the control of the local utilities services.
About 6,000 pieces of snow removal equipment and crew are battling to keep the roads clear. Moscow traffic police ask drivers not to park their cars in roads which are being cleared.
The capital’s traffic police said that during such conditions, the number of minor car accidents usually increases two-fold. They asked drivers to be cautious, not to drive fast and to pay attention to people crossing the street.
