POLITICS

* The Obama administration has backed the initiative by the majority of US lawmakers to apply the so-called Magnitsky Law only to Russian officials in order to prevent the negative impact of sanctions on US relations with China and oil-rich Arab countries. (Kommersant)

* The two men who form Russia’s ruling tandem - President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev - have seen their credibility and approval ratings drop over the past 11 months, according to leading Russian public opinion pollsters. (Kommersant, Vedomosti)

RUSSIA

* Russia imposes mandatory visa requirement for the crews of EU air carriers making regular flights to the country. The measure reflects the lack of a harmonized EU position on the question of visa-free travel between the EU countries and Russia, according to Russian officials. (Izvestia)

* Russia decided to postpone the December launch of its Glonass-K2 satellite until February-March next year citing problems with Fregat booster used on Soyuz carrier rockets. (Izvestia)

 

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

* Russia's fourth largest steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) may stop production at its Belgian subsidiary La Louviere as the plant currently operates at half of its 2.6-million ton capacity. Russia’s Evraz Group and Mechel have already suspended or reduced production in Europe in order to increase cost-efficiency of their European assets. (Kommersant)

* Litasco, a subsidiary of Russia’s LUKoil company, has won a tender on the deliveries of gas condensate from Kurdistan. (Kommersant, The Moscow Times)

* A domestic discount air carrier is unlikely to appear in Russia in the near future as the proposal by Aeroflot met a serious opposition from government officials and trade unions. (Vedomosti)

* Japan’s electronics manufacturer Sharp is looking for potential investors in the United States. Dell, Intel and Qualcomm are on the list. (Vedomosti)

 

SOCIETY

* Russian government officials received a 13% pay raise in 2012, according to the Russian statistical agency Rosstat. However, the raise spread between the ministries was very unbalanced, which indicates that the administrative reform in the country has not yet taken root. (Kommersant)

* A Moscow court has ruled that a video by punk group Pussy Riot is extremist and must be banned from the Russian Internet. The ruling paves the way for investigators to file new charges against band members and their associates, human rights activists believe. (Kommersant, Rossiskaya Gazeta)

* Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov has reassured the Russian citizens that the Apocalypse is not coming to Earth in December. His ministry has all necessary means to predict catastrophes and none of them indicates that the end of humanity is near. (Rossiiskaya Gazeta)

* Russian lawmakers are planning to adopt legislation aimed at developing effective measures to prevent the spread of psychiatric disorder among the Russian citizens.
