POLICEMEN DO NOT LINK MOSCOW METRO BLAST TO ETHNIC GANGS

MOSCOW, MARCH 10 (RIA NOVOSTI) - Moscow police experts do not think an appalling metro blast of February 6 was related to North Caucasian or any other ethnic gangs active in the city, Colonel Andrei Bolshakov, prominent on the Moscow police, said to a news conference.

A connection was alleged right after the tragedy, and detectives contacted "authoritative people" to check the assumption. The people said they were not involved as they don't gain from it. The police colonel refused to specify, for secrecy's sake, who of his colleagues had been talking to criminal group leaders, and how the interviews were arranged.

Moscow gangs, of North Caucasian or any other ethnicity, are mere bandits and would not gain anything if they were backing Chechen terrorists because terror acts may hit their near and dear, said Lieutenant-Colonel Yevgeny Guzar, another anti-organized crime department officer.

Ethnic Chechen community members in Moscow are helping their kin in Chechnya - but no proof of them "deliberately feeding terrorists" has ever reached the police, he added.

A car blown up in the Moscow metro in the morning rush hour of February 6 killed forty and injured more than a hundred, say the latest statistics.
