Ukraine will scrap 3,500 tons of ordnance from Russia’s Black Sea fleet under a 2012 contract worth 235 million rubles ($7.3 million).

Ukraine will scrap the ordnance at the UOSM-DM center in Gruzevitsa, Khmelnitsky Region, the head of Ukroboronservis, Yevgeny Golubenko, is quoted as saying in Thursday’s issue of the Ukrainian journal Sevodnya.

The center has capacity to scrap up to 12,000 tons of ordnance – aerial bombs, artillery shells, rockets and other ammunition - a year, Golubenko said.

The process involves breaking down the materiel into its component parts for recycling: mainly steel, non-ferrous metals and explosives for industrial uses.

Agreement that Ukraine would carry out the work was reached at a February 27 meeting in Sevastopol between the Ukrainian and Russian defense ministers, Dmytro Salamatin and Anatoly Serdyukov.
