MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - NATO is strengthening its presence in the Black Sea; by the end of the week, a French warship will join two American vessels already stationed in Black Sea waters, a military source told RIA Novosti on Monday.

"The French reconnaissance ship Dupuy de Lome will join the American ships on October 17," the source said.

On October 3, the command ship, the USS Mount Whitney entered the Black Sea, joining the USS Cole destroyer, deployed in the area in September.

RIA Novosti's source argued that under the guise of guaranteeing peace and stability in the region, NATO forces are studying the hydrology and the depths of the Black Sea.

According to the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, warships of countries that do not have access to the Black Sea, may stay in the area for no more than 21 days.

Following Crimea's reunification with Russia in March 2014, NATO has been boosting its military presence close to the Russian border. In particular, the bloc dispatched a record number of nine vessels to the Black Sea in July and reinforced air patrolling missions in Baltic airspace.

Russia has repeatedly expressed concern over the increasing NATO military presence close to its borders.
