WASHINGTON, September 24 (RIA Novosti) – The US Central Command (CENTCOM), alone and with the aid of allied nations, has carried out 198 airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) targets in Iraq and Syria since August, US Department of Defense said Wednesday in a press release.

"To date… Centcom has conducted 198 airstrikes across Iraq against ISIL [IS], and along with partner nations, has conducted 20 airstrikes against ISIL [IS] in Syria," the statement reads, citing CENTCOM reports.

Centcom specified that eight of the total of 20 airstrikes, carried out in Syria, were conducted solely by the US forces.

The statement also noted that US military used a "mix of attack aircraft, bombers, fighters and remotely piloted aircraft," in its anti-IS strikes on the Syrian territory.

The role of allied military in fighting terrorists, including France, which claimed it had conducted airstrikes in Iraq, was not disclosed in the press release.

In response to the advance of the IS, also known as ISIL, in Iraq, Washington launched airstrikes against the insurgents' positions on the Iraqi territory in August and later expanded the operation to Syria. This week, the United States with its Arab allies started carrying out attacks, targeting facilities of various terrorists groups in Syria. The White House said it had notified Syria of the upcoming attacks, though, it did not request Damascus' consent to proceed with military action.
