Russia needs to assess all potential military threats and find a sufficient and adequate response to each of them, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia needs to assess all potential military threats and find a sufficient and adequate response to each of them, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

“We need to closely study potential threats to Russia’s military security. Each of them should get a sufficient, adequate response,” the president said at a meeting to discuss Russia's arms procurement program for 2016-2025.

The Russian Armed Forces received over 3,600 units of main military equipment in 2014 as a result of the efficient implementation of the state defense orders, Putin said.

“This year alone, as of August, the troops have already received more than 3,600 units of main military equipment and almost 241,000 units of other types of weaponry," Putin said. «It is important to maintain this intensive tempo," he added.

The Russian leader stressed the demand for a breakthrough in the development of high-precision weaponry in Russia.

“In the next few years, we must achieve a breakthrough in the development of all components of high-precision weaponry, and build uniform types of general-purpose military equipment…," Putin said.

Russia’s security measures have been purely defensive and any hysteria on the subject would be inappropriate, Putin said, stressing that Moscow has no plans to join the new arms race.

“We have stated and warned on numerous occasions that we will have to… take adequate retaliatory measures to ensure our security," Putin said. “We have stated this on many occasions but it would be welcome if no one falls into hysterics when these measures get final approval and we start to put them into practice. I would like to stress that everything that we do, comes as a response."

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, in charge of the defense industry, said in April Russia would invest 20 trillion rubles ($560 billion) in the coming years to modernize its army and naval fleet and 3 trillion rubles ($85 billion) to modernize Russian defense plants.
