MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) – The current events in Ukraine is a problem shared by Russia, Ukraine and the European Union, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov told RIA Novosti and Slovak television Saturday.

“What is going on in Ukraine is a common problem for Russia, Ukraine and Europe as a whole. We couldn’t have even imagined that a hotbed of bloodshed would emerge in Europe after the Second World War,” the official said.

“It’s ten times more painful for us since the Ukrainian nation has been and will be our sister nation. A lot of emotions are being expressed in connection to what is happening in Ukraine. There are also a lot of lies. A full-fledged information war is being waged against Russia. There are attempts to present Russia as some kind of monster, which is trying to impose its view on what Europe should be like. But it’s far from reality,” Antonov said.

Since mid-April, Kiev has been conducting a military operation against the southeastern regions of Ukraine that refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new government after a February coup.

Moscow has repeatedly condemned Kiev’s military campaign against independence supporters in the east of the country and urged for an immediate stop to the punitive operation, advocating a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Over 2,500 people, including the victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash, have been killed and more than 6,000 injured since the start of Kiev’s military operation against the militia fighters in eastern Ukraine in mid-April, according to the United Nations.
