MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti) – North Korea on Thursday fired three short-ranged rockets into the Sea of Japan, Agence France-Presse reported citing a North Korea defense ministry spokesman.

"North Korea fired three short-range projectiles into the East Sea (Sea of Japan)," the spokesman said.

The rockets were fired from the North Korean port city of Wonsan.

The incident took place the same day Pope Francis arrived to South Korea for a five-day official visit. The pope is expected to bring a message of peace and reconciliation for all South and North Koreans.

Early August, North Korea's state media indicated that the country would continue rocket launches as part of regular military drills, which it claims are aimed at countering "war preparatory" exercises by South Korean and US troops which are expected to start on August 18.
