MOSCOW, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius called on all Iraqi communities to form a unity government to resist the advancing Islamic State militants, Reuters reported on Sunday.

"Iraq is in need of a wide unity government, and all Iraqis should feel that they are represented in this government, and all Iraqis should feel they are represented to take part in this battle against terrorism," Fabius told a news conference with his Iraqi counterpart in Baghdad, according to the news agency.

France is planning to join the humanitarian campaign in Iraq, where Fabius arrived to discuss the situation and oversee the delivery of French assistance. From Baghdad, the foreign minister is expected to go to Kurdistan’s capital Erbil to meet with Massoud Barzani, the leader of Iraqi Kurds, who are fighting against the onslaught of Islamic State (IS) insurgents.

The Sunni group Islamic State (IS), previously fighting in Syria and known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), seized large parts of Iraq in early June, ratcheting up tensions in the region. In late June, the Islamic State announced the establishment of a caliphate on the territories it had captured in Iraq and Syria.
