MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - Sailors of the Northern Fleet tracked a foreign submarine near Russian waters as part of an unplanned military exercise, Vadim Serga, the fleet’s representative, said Thursday.

“During today’s unplanned exercise we have tested not only the readiness of the alert anti-submarine forces, but also the readiness of surface ships’ crews, presently carrying out planned exercises, to respond to unexpected threats to Russia’s national security at sea,” Serga said citing Vice Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov.

The representative said that the exercise included the participation of the Kola Flotilla and the Northern Fleet Air Force, with the fleet’s forces in the Barents Sea also taking part.

Several anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft were sent to the area of the exercise, tasked with tracking down a foreign submarine. The aircraft were joined by the North Fleet’s two anti-submarine ships, which are to conduct torpedo and anti-submarine mortar firing tests.

According to Serga, unplanned alert exercises take place regularly in the North Fleet.
