WASHINGTON, February 13 (RIA Novosti) - The US Department of Defense (DOD) has awarded a $3 million research contract to California-based AOptix to develop “groundbreaking” technology that could one day allow troops in the field to use a smartphone to scan and record facial features and identity people from a distance, AOptix announced Wednesday.

“The DOD saw an early version of the system and was impressed with its capabilities,” Chuck Yort, AOptix’s vice president for identity solutions, told RIA Novosti. “The product will be modified to meet the DOD’s specific needs, but will provide iris, face, voice and fingerprint recognition all in a smartphone-based device.”

These “Smart Mobile Identity” (SMI) devices will allow for biological identity verification in areas where it was previously thought to be impractical, cost prohibitive, or impossible, AOptix representatives said.

The devices are part of a portable class of biometrics-based hardware and software products that allows built-in cameras on smartphones or tablets the ability to do facial recognition or with the help of additional sensors, provide fingerprint and iris recognition.

While exact information surrounding how the US military plans to use the technology is classified, a spokesman with AOptix told RIA Novosti the devices have practical real world uses as well.

“The potential applications of SMI include law enforcement, border security, national and civil ID programs, disaster relief and humanitarian aid, and healthcare,” the spokesman said.

For example, SMI could allow a border agent to quickly identify a person at a security checkpoint. In the event of a disaster, SMI could be used to help limit fraud by ensuring financial aid is disbursed to the people who are in critical need, the company said.

“Currently US troops rely on a single-use device, known as the Handheld Interagency Identity Detection System (HIIDE) to scan, upload and transmit data from someone’s facial, eye or thumb feature into wartime biometrics databases,” according to reporter Spencer Ackerman in an article for Wired’s national security blog Danger Room.

For the past two years, AOptix said it has been developing SMI solutions for commercial use, adding the technology is almost ready for the market. AOptix is teaming up with information technology firm CACI International to create a classified version of the software for the Pentagon.

“Users of these systems in-field will benefit from a more compact, lightweight, versatile and accurate identity verification device than has previously been available,” Dean Senner, chairman and chief executive of AOptix said in a statement.

This so called leak about the US ABM system is just another ploy to get the Russians to back down along with reducing there nuclear arsenal, coming on the hells of nuclear cuts talks.
The West knows Russia only have a loud mouth a loud one at that but no BITE this has been the way since the Cuban missile crisis, the Russian Typhoon class subs, and many other painful cuts that Russian has made to the West in the pass.
The West policy is simple Pay compensation get Russia to rid themselves of weapons, and then the Russians swallow the bitter pills of defeat.
But I tell the Russians it is simple logic Syria falls, then Iran, then bring down Oil prices bleed Russia’s foreign reserves, start mass demonstrations, then start the unrest from the Caucasus, then the Far East says look we are far from Moscow it is time for independences from Moscow.
Once the West gets there hands on oil that they consider enough to start the economic attack on Russia they will “no two ways about that” Reset or no reset!

“This so-called leak about US ABM system” is in fact an official press statement from the vendor (AOptix) of a facial recognition application for smart phones. It has nothing to do with missile technology of any kind. This makes it a random rant over some paranoid conspiracy theory that no one with more than three brain cells working together would believe for a moment.

Even Putin knows that The West has zero interest in attacking Russia – either militarily, politically, or economically. He uses The West as a scapegoat to distract the people from the systematic looting of the economy by himself and his cronies. Apparently the $40 billion he’s managed to steal for himself so far isn’t enough. Anyway, he preys on the paranoia that has been an integral part of the Russian soul for centuries.

He knows that the current number of thermonuclear warheads is far more than is needed for a strategic deterrent. The warheads and delivery systems he’s cutting are obsolete systems to expensive to maintain anymore (the Project 941 submarines are an excellent example); what’s left is all the newest systems. He also knows that with all of the new oil and gas discoveries in North America over the past decade, the United States will be a net exporter of energy by 2015 – as Russia is now. What purpose would be served in lowering oil prices then???

Your rant is totally devoid of any logic or reason – mostly because it’s based on fantasy and paranoia and a total denial of facts. There are doctors and drugs that can treat those conditions, and I strongly suggest you avail yourself of both.
