The Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office has proposed raising fines for young men shirking compulsory military service, CMPO department head Alexander Nikitin said on Monday.

“Administrative liability for draft dodging should be enhanced and fines for ‘fugitives from the army’ increased,” he said in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta to be published on Tuesday.

“The administrative penalty today is a 500-ruble [$15] fine. That is too little of course,” he said, adding “criminal liability for dodging compulsory military service could be up to two years in prison.”

Another way of reducing draft dodging, Nikitin suggested, would be to enhance the prestige of military service.
