Two staff sergeants will have to face trial by courts martial over an incident that saw U.S. Marines desecrating the bodies of dead Taliban fighters, the CNN quoted the Marine Corps as announcing on Monday.
A video of U.S. marines urinating on dead Taliban fighters was posted on the internet in early January. It sparked outrage among Afghans, with many considering international troops as invaders.
The CNN cited a press release from the Marine Corp as stating that staff sergeants Joseph Chamblin and Edward Deptola were charged for the incident, which happened in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province in late July 2011.
The two Marines, assigned to North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune, were also accused of dereliction of duty, failure to supervise junior Marines and failure to report those Marines’ misconduct.
Three other Marines, disciplined for their role in the incident, pleaded guilty in August to a number of violations: one to "urinating on the body of a deceased Taliban soldier", another to posing for a photo with human casualties, and a third for lying to investigators, according to the BBC.
