The Severomorsk destroyer from Russia's Northern Fleet will joint NATO warships in the FRUKUS-2010 international naval exercises in the North Atlantic on July 22-25, a Russian military spokesman said Wednesday.

The annual exercises traditionally involve France, Russia, the Britain and the United States. They aim at practicing interoperability for future joint operations under the UN mandate.

"The Russian Navy will be represented at the exercises by the Severomorsk destroyer, which will make port call at the British port of Plymouth on July 19-22," the spokesman said.

"During the drills the ships from the four countries will practice anti-terrorism missions and maneuvering in joint formations," the official said.

Previously called RUKUS, the exercises were launched in 1988 to promote dialogue between the Soviet Union, Britain, and the United States. The name was changed to FRUKUS in 2003, when France formally joined the group.

Severomorsk is an Udaloy-class missile destroyer armed with anti-ship missiles, 30-mm and 100-mm guns, and two Ka-27 Helix helicopters.

Last year, Severomorsk joined the French Tourville frigate, the U.S. Klakring missile frigate and the British York destroyer in the FRUKUS-2009 naval drills.
