The US-led international coalition chiefs in Syria are accountable for sending troops to areas targeted by Russian airstrikes, Russian Defense Ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said on Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — His comments came after The Wall Street Journal accused Russian combat planes of striking a military base used by the United States and the United Kingdom near the Syrian-Jordanian border, citing a source in Pentagon.

"Military chiefs of the special units of the anti-IS [anti-Daesh] coalition's countries are exclusively accountable for the fact that their troops are exposed to danger in the areas targeted by the Russian Aerospace Forces," Konashenkov said.

He added that Russia was constantly asking partners in fight against terrorism in Syria to notify of locations of allied moderate opposition forces, so that they would not be targeted by accident.

Russia has been conducting a military operation against terrorists in Syria since September 30 at President Bashar Assad's request.
