Transdnestr parliamentary vote valid - election commission

04:37 13/12/2010

Sunday's parliamentary election in Transdnestr was valid as turnout exceeded the 25% threshold in all the 43 electoral districts, the breakaway Moldovan republic's Central Election Commission (CEC) said.

A total of 42.6% of more than 400,000 eligible voters cast their ballots at 259 polling stations as 120 candidates ran for five-year terms to hold 43 seats in the republic's unicameral parliament, the Supreme Council.

CEC head Pyotr Denisenko said preliminary results were likely to be announced Monday morning, adding that no violations were reported.

Some 100 international observers from Russia, Ukraine, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Moldova, Belarus, France, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Nagorny Karabakh monitored the election.

The Russian-speaking province of Transdnestr has maintained de facto independence from Moldova since a brief war in 1992, which erupted from a buildup of tensions following the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Tiraspol insists on independence, and even integration with Russia, while Chisinau says it is willing only to give Transdnestr autonomy within Moldova.
