The leader of the provisional Kyrgyz government may become the interim president until elections are held, according to a decree currently being discussed by cabinet members in the Central Asian country's capital.
The government has drafted a decree which would delegate power to an interim president until December 31, 2011. The document named the current provisional premier, Roza Otunbayeva, as the interim president, but also envisaged a nationwide referendum on the issue as an option.
The interim president may not be a member of any political party and must ensure free and fair presidential elections, but will not be allowed to take part in them.
The interim government is currently discussing the final draft of the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan. A referendum on the new Constitution is slated for June 27.
The Interim Government took power in Kyrgyzstan on April 7 after mass protests. Ex-president Kurmanbek Bakiyev resigned and left the country.
