Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych, who won the first round of ex-Soviet state's presidential elections, said early parliamentary elections may take place in the country in May 2010, if he wins the presidential race.

The first round of the presidential vote took place in Ukraine on January 17. Yanukovych, the leader of the opposition Party of Regions, garnered 35.3% of vote, some 10% more than his main contender, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. The two candidates will face each other in the second round scheduled for February 7.

In line with Ukrainian laws, parliamentary elections should take place in the country in 2012. However, many analysts say a new president may announce early parliamentary polls.

The Ukrainskaya Pravda online edition quoted Yanukovych as saying he hoped the current Parliament would support his policies, if he became president.

"If it does not happen, early [parliamentary] elections will take place in May," he said.

On Saturday, Yulia Tymosenko ruled out the possibility of early parliamentary elections in the country.

"Certainly, nobody will announce early [parliamentary] elections," she said.

Tymosenko accused Yanukovych of attempting to corrupt candidates who lost the elections by promising them seats in the parliament, in order to secure victory in the second round.

Ukrainian incumbent President Viktor Yushchenko, who lost the January 17 polls with slightly more than 5% of the vote, expressed confidence on Friday that early parliamentary elections would take place in the country in any case. He said he would support the polls.

Ukrainian ex-National Bank head Sergey Tigipko, who came third in the first round of the presidential elections with 13.6% of the vote, has also called for the early parliamentary polls.
