The number of tourists who have visited the Shanghai World Expo since its opening on May 1 has exceeded the expected number of 70 million.

The number of tourists who have visited the Shanghai World Expo since its opening on May 1 has exceeded the expected number of 70 million, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Sunday.

The exhibition organizers said before its opening that they expected about 70 million people to attend Shanghai Expo-2010. According to the Expo media center, the total number of tourists who have attended the world exhibition since May 1 reached 70.23 million on Sunday afternoon.

Shanghai Expo-2010 has broken the previous record of about 64 million visitors over a six-month period set at the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan.

The number of people who visited the Russian pavilion at the exhibition is estimated at 7.208 million people, suggesting that every tenth tourist is visiting the Russian section.

Russia constructed the pavilion at Shanghai Expo-2010 for the first time in 30 years. The sun-shaped building comprises 12 white-and-gold towers symbolizing the 12 months of the year, and occupies an area of 6,000 square meters.

Shanghai Expo-2010 organizers have said they are expecting from 400,000 to 500,000 people to visit the exhibition daily before its closes on October 31.
