MINSK (Sputnik) — One person has died carrying out building work at the Belarusian nuclear power plant, currently under construction, the facility said in a statement.

"There was an incident with the Russian subcontractor at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant while carrying out construction work in which a person died," the statement published Sunday reads.

An investigation into the incident, which took place on Friday, has already been launched, according to the statement.

On July 9, another accident took place at the Belarusian facility’s construction site, when a nuclear reactor fell several feet from a crane. Belarusian authorities later made a decision to replace the reactor’s shell.

The Belarusian NPP with total power production capacity of up to 2400 MW is currently being jointly built on the border with Lithuania by Belarus and Russia and is set to become the country's first nuclear plant.

The first power unit is expected to become operational in 2018, the second in 2020.
