A French court ruled to suspend the burkini ban in the French town of Villeneuve-Loubet.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Council of State, the French Highest Court issued a ruling on Friday suspending the ban on the full-body burkini bathing suits designed for Muslim women in the town of Villeneuve-Loubet, the spokesman for the court told Sputnik on Friday.

"The decision is against the ban," Yohann Brunet said.

On Thursday, France's Human Rights League filed an appeal on the ban that was imposed by the authorities of  Villeneuve-Loubet at French Riviera resort. Currently about 30 French towns prohibit burkinis.

"The Council of State ruled out that the ban adopted in Villeneuve-Loubet is unjustified and suspended its action. Thus, the Council of State protects fundamental freedoms, limits the power of the mayors, when they violate these freedoms and make it unjustifiably," the Human Rights League lawyer who attended the meeting said.

The burkini ban issue has become one of the most contested topics in France with French former president Nicolas Sarkozy, who on Thursday kicked off his official election campaign for the new term in 2017, proposing to ban burkini all across France.

A Ifop poll conducted on Thursday found that almost 64 percent of French respondents are opposed to women wearing burkinis at the beach.
