MOSCOW (Sputnik) The UK’s growing military budget can accommodate a new weapons system worth over $240.6 million, to be fitted on the next-generation Global Combat Ship, UK Defense Ministry said Thursday.

"Our growing defence budget means we can invest in a cutting edge weapon system for the Royal Navy’s next generation Global Combat Ship at the best value for taxpayers," UK Minister for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin said.

The money will be spent on the design and manufacture of the first three guns, as well as training and ammunition, according to the ministerial statement.

The Maritime Indirect Fire System (MIFS) will sit on board all Type 26 Global Combat Ships, which are currently being designed by a US-based office of UK security firm BAE Systems. First gun systems are expected to be delivered to the United Kingdom in 2020.
