Alain Marsaud, MP from the party ‘Les Républicains', supports the idea of creating a civil police in France. In an interview with Sputnik, he said that civil mobilization could be a good option to improve security in the country.

According to Marsaud, the French government lacks capacities to guarantee security in the country and citizens should take the initiative to ensure their own protection, either individually or in groups.

"I think we need to act like other countries did before us, I mean, in particular, Israel — through what I call "civil mobilization" or "mutual civil vigilance". It means that we should tell every French citizen or resident: you are responsible for your safety and for the safety of those around you — your neighbors, etc. […]," the politician said.

Marsaud also argued that such governmental functions like public monitoring and security control should be delegated to private firms.

"I believe that we need to create a new concept of public security for which the police, the gendarmerie and other services will bear responsibility. We must, of course, also consider the creation of a private security system for which private firms will be responsible. So this requires professionalism and in this case society will practically make a new choice," the politician stressed.

Marsaud's statements come several days after a deadly terrorist attack took place in the French city of Nice. On July 2014, a truck rammed into a large crowd celebrating Bastille Day, killing at least 84 people and injuring hundreds of others.

In an interview with Sputnik, mayor of Nice Philippe Pradal said that Nice has long suffered from a lack of national police forces and that his numerous complaints about insufficient security in the city have remained unanswered.

European countries have been boosting their security measures for months following a number of deadly attacks that took place across the EU, including a series of attacks in Paris on November 13, the multiple blasts in Brussels on March 22 and a recent shooting in Munich, although in case of the latest the police has not yet identified connections between the perpetrator and terrorist groups.
