ST. PETERSBURG, April 8 (RIA Novosti) – Russian border guards detained a Finnish woman last month who was attempting to smuggle her Turkish lover across the Russian-Finnish border, law enforcement said Tuesday.

“While inspecting the car of a 55-year-old Finnish woman who was on her way home, we found a 37-year-old Turkish citizen hiding in the car trunk," the St. Petersburg department of the Russian Border Service said in a statement.

“The Finnish citizen said that she was an accomplice in the crime because of her love for the Turkish man, who she allegedly married in Turkey,” the statement explains.

The man was detained in the city of Vyborg, a historic Russian city on the border with Finland. Police filed a criminal case against the man for attempting to cross the border without valid documents. He faces a maximum of two years in jail and up to a 200,000 ruble ($5,600) fine.

The Finnish woman was taken into custody in St. Petersburg and has been charged with aiding and abetting an attempted crime.

The incident took place in March but was not announced at the time, law enforcement said.
