MOSCOW, February 26 (RIA Novosti) – A senior Russian anti-corruption police official has been detained over claims of bribery and abuse of office in a case the appears to highlight the challenges of fighting graft.

Boris Kolesnikov, deputy head of the Interior Ministry’s directorate fighting corruption and economic crimes, was held for questioning Tuesday in connection with recent arrests in his department, a law enforcement source told RIA Novosti.

Kolesnikov's detention follows the resignation of his boss, Maj. Gen. Denis Sugrobov, after four of his subordinates were arrested last week, Kommersant newspaper reported Wednesday.

Sugrobov's resignation was signed by President Vladimir Putin.

Kommersant described Kolesnikov as being Sugrobov’s “right hand man” in the anti-corruption directorate.

Kolesnikov has become the seventh and highest-ranking official so far suspected in an alleged scheme to entrap a Federal Security Service officer on bribery charges.
