MAKHACHKALA, December 16 (RIA Novosti) – Three police officers and one border guard were killed on Monday in a clash with suspected militants in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a law enforcement source said.

The clash occurred near the village of Shaitli in the Tsuntinsky district, a remote and mountainous area on Russia’s frontier with Georgia. The source said Monday that the manhunt for the suspected perpetrators had been suspended until morning.

Attacks on law enforcement and security personnel are frequent in the North Caucasus. An violent Islamist insurgency that had its roots in separatist wars in Chechnya has spread to neighboring provinces.
