MOSCOW, December 30 (RIA Novosti) – Siberian police detained a man at the Russian-Chinese border who was attempting to smuggle a large batch of gold into China, the Interior Ministry reported on Sunday.

The man was detained on Saturday morning at the Zabaikalsk automobile checkpoint in East Siberia. During the inspection of his Toyota car, “the police found and seized 75 kilos of alluvial gold worth 13.5 million rubles [$440,000],” the ministry said.

"The person detained tried to smuggle the precious metal across the state border into China.”

A criminal probe into the illegal trade in precious metals has been launched.

This is the second major smuggling attempt in the area over the past week.

On Wednesday, Siberian borders guards detained a man at the Zabaikalsk checkpoint who was attempting to smuggle 12 kilos of gold dust into China.

“A package containing gold dust was found during joint border and customs inspection of a Toyota Hiace car heading for China from Russia,” Regional Border Guard Service spokeswoman Marina Kostyuchenkova said.

“The package was under the seat of the driver - a Trans-Baikal Territory resident who did not even try to hide the precious metal,” she said.
