Russia: Over 1.7 Mln Human Rights Violations in Jan.-June

Russia’s General Prosecutor said on Monday it had registered more than 1.7 million human rights violations during the first half of 2012, according to a press release posted to its web site.

MOSCOW, December 10 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s General Prosecutor said on Monday it had registered more than 1.7 million human rights violations during the first half of 2012, according to a press release posted to its web site.

Officials took disciplinary action against about 154,000 perpetrators and opened more than 7,000 criminal cases over the violations, the statement said, while “special attention was paid to the protection of minors, seniors and persons with disabilities.”

In comparison, the agency counted more than 2.3 million violations during the first 10 months of 2011.

The release of the results coincides with International Human Rights Day.
