A police officer has been wounded in a shootout in Makhachkala, the capital of the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, investigators told RIA Novosti.

“Unknown assailants opened fire on police officers when they were trying to search their car late on Tuesday,” a spokesman for the Investigative Committee said.

“An officer was injured in his shoulder and hospitalized,” he said, adding that the attackers escaped inside their VAZ 21099 sedan.

An investigation is underway.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Investigative Committee reported another case of militant violence: two police officers were killed in Makhachkala. The assailants escaped.

The troubled region sees frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and government officials as Moscow continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there. At least 12 militant groups with an estimated strength of about 300 people are believed to be operating in Dagestan.
