Police detained a man in the Volga Federal District as he tried to steal a load of gunpowder from a military test site, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

The man in the Mari El Republic snuck onto the base through a hole in the perimeter fence and took a package of 98 explosive tubes, each 30 centimeters long.

The detainee told the police he intended to use the gunpowder as “firewood” to fuel the stove.

The man has been charged with illegal storage of explosives. He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
