A bomb exploded in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan on Thursday, fatally wounding a district police officer, the republic’s Interior Ministry said. The explosion occurred in the city of Buynaksk around 07:30 a.m.

Police Captain Rustam Magomedov, 38, was on his way to work when an explosive device placed under his car went off. He was rushed to the hospital where he died hours later, a spokesman from Dagestan’s Interior Ministry told RIA Novosti.

Local authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the case, but said police will also be investigating illicit trafficking of arms and ammunition as well as manufacturing and trafficking of explosives.

The troubled region sees frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and government officials as Moscow continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there. At least 12 militant groups made up of about 300 people are believed to operate in Dagestan. Poor economic conditions and unemployment are thought to be the main factors driving local residents to join militant groups.
